Jamia Millia Islamia is set to establish a medical college on its campus. Newly-appointed Vice-Chancellor of the university Talat Ahmad on Wednesday made an announcement in this regard. Apart from a medical college, the university would also set up a 300-bed hospital. The proposal is yet to receive a final nod from the Government.
The new VC said he will try to bring back renowned professors like Professor Mushirul Hasan, Radha Kumar Ahmed announced, “I intend to take this up with the Government for adequate support and financial assistance for its fructification.” He added that the university wants enough money to accommodate 300 beds for the hospital, as planned.
The university already has a Faculty of Dentistry and Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. However, this medical college comes as a necessity for the university since there is no Government college-cum-hospital in the vicinity. “The medical college in Jamia is a mandatory requirement since there is no Government college-cum-hospital in the neighbourhood. A facility of this kind will help everyone,” said Ahmad.
Ahmad also has plans to meet the Minister of Human Resource Development and Delhi Government officials to expedite the process. “Once we get a go-ahead, we will start the construction. The project will take a few years to complete,” he said. Other than this, the new V-C has also paid sufficient interest in the healthcare sector as he is planning to provide a medical insurance cover to all students. At present, the university has a full-fledged health centre which offers free OPD facilities in cardiology, ENT, dermatology and pathology.
Meanwhile, the university also has several other changes lined up. Among many, one significant change is that Jamia is contending for NAAC Accreditation. Ahmad said, “I want that Jamia Millia Islamia is at par and someday even better than JNU and DU. We are an old and reputed institution who needs to get global recognition.”
