Maruti's spare parts trigger bomb scare at IGI Airport

Published on:

Security apparatus at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport went into a tizzy on Wednesday after the image of a consignment during security check raised the red alert.

Bomb squads and canine teams were rushed in to check a suspect object that was recovered at the cargo hold area of IGI airport.

However, the consignment was declared safe after it was found that it only contained some auto spare parts.

Director General of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) O P Singh said the "suspect item has been declared safe and there is nothing to worry about".

At 7.15 am, an X-ray image of a consignment of Maruti spare parts raised suspicion among the staff of the domestic cargo terminal, according to sources in the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

The terminal staff immediately alerted the CISF, who along with a team of BCAS and a bomb detection and disposal squad rushed to the spot.

"The bomb disposal squad and canine teams found that the suspect item was nothing but some spare parts of (auto) company Maruti. The consignment and the area have been sanitised and declared safe," officials involved in airport security said.

The cargo, which was declared safe around 9 am by both the CISF and the bomb disposal squad, was to be loaded on a Delhi-Goa Vistara flight.

It may be noted that the cargo terminal of the IGI Airport is guarded by private agencies but in case of a threat or emergency the Central Industrial Security Force and the police step in.
