Man stabs wife to death over 'illicit relations'

A58-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her husband after the couple had an altercation behind Mount Carmel School in South Delhi's Anand Niketan Area on Wednesday, said police.

A senior police official said accused Mukesh Monga murdered his wife Manju Monga, who used to run a boutique shop in Anand Niketan, over suspicions of her illicit relations.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District, Nupur Prasad said the couple had an altercation after which the accused pulled out a knife which he had carried with him and stabbed her in her abdomen, neck and face.

Bystanders rushed to the woman's help and caught hold of her husband, said police, adding that a guard posted in the area informed police after which they reached the spot and arrested Mukesh.

"The woman had sustained multiple injuries in her neck, abdomen and chest. The injuries on the neck were so deep that it raises doubts if the man had tried to cut her head off. We will rely on the post mortem report before making any further comments," said Prasad.

Police said Mukesh doesn't have a permanent source of income and works in his sister's institute as a guitar instructor.

"According to their children it was their mother who was supporting the family, as their father was not having any permanent source of income," said  Prasad.

Police said the couple's children told the investigating officer that Mukesh was not present at home on Tuesday and suddenly turned up on Wednesday morning.

Mukesh's daughter Vartika (32) works in an NGO at Jor Bagh, while their son Dhawal (26) works as a model and actor, said their neighbours.

According to the neighbours, the family was torn between the simmering feud between the husband and wife with children standing by their mother. Mukesh and his octogenarian father lived in the same house although their relations with the rest of the family remained tense.

Police have registered a case of murder at the South Campus police station and are questioning Mukesh about the motive of the murder. Police are suspecting that the knife had already been kept in the car making it a pre-planned murder.

"We are investigating the case from all the angles and will take appropriate action accordingly,"  the Additional DCP added.
