In a shocking incident of honour killing in the national Capital, a 30-year-old man was brutally stabbed to death with knives while the 23-year-old woman, with whom he had allegedly eloped, sustained stab injuries in East Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar area on Friday evening, police said. The deceased, Dinesh, was son of the woman’s maternal aunt, they added.
Two accused persons, identified as 22-year-old Shakar and 25-year-old Rinku, who are brother and maternal uncle of the woman respectively, were arrested, police said.
“The accused told the police that their other family members were feeling embarrassed as the elopement has caused loss of face to them”, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Ravindra Yadav. They hatched the plan to kill Dinesh, Yadav said.
“The woman lived in Patparganj area. The accused got to know about her whereabouts and Dinesh after a tip-off from one of their distant cousins,” Yadav said.
“Initial reports suggest that dinesh probably got down to answer nature's call and it’s that time they were assaulted,” said Yadav.
“Around 5.17 pm, Shankar and Rinku took Dinesh and the woman in a car no Dl1ZB5911. By the time they reached near the canal in Mayur Vihar area, the duo stabbed Dinesh and the 23-year-old woman”, the Joint CP said.
A home guard jawan, Sonu who happened to be in the vicinity, heard their cries for help. Displaying presence of mind, Sonu managed to stop the car and alerted locals. Hearing Sonu’s voice, locals came to the rescue and they informed the police control room (PCR).
A van arrived on the spot and rushed both the injured couple to nearby lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. Dinesh was declared brought dead as he had received fatal stab wounds on his chest and abdomen. The woman is stated to be out of danger.
Police said Dinesh was already married and had three children. He lived in Seemapuri. Dinesh used to work as a safai karamchari.
A senior police officer said, “As per the preliminary investigation, Dinesh eloped with the woman, who is his relative four days ago. The woman, who was set to be married next month, reportedly fell in love with Dinesh.”
Yadav said, “The accused disclosed that the woman had allegedly taken all her ornaments and cash meant for her marriage along with her and eloped Dinesh. They believed Dinesh had enticed and tutored her into bringing gold jewellery and cash.”
An FIR has been lodged at New Ashok Nagar Police station and investigation has been taken up to ascertain whether more persons were involved in the conspiracy, said a senior police official.
