An unidentified man fled with a bag containing jewellery worth Rs 55 lakh from a baggage scanning machine at Chandni Chowk Metro Station on Tuesday evening.

The jewellery belonged to a Haryana-based businessman. The daring robbery has sent alarm bells ringing in Delhi Metro and put a big question mark on the ability of security personnel manning the machine. After scanning CCTV footage, investigators are preparing a sketch of the accused.

Police said complainant Ravinder Soni, who hails from Yamuna Nagar, often came to Chandni Chowk for purchasing jewellery. “On Tuesday, around 6.30 pm, he was returning after trading from Katra Nawab,” said a senior police officer.

Police said Soni put his bag in the scanning machine at the Metro station and ducked through the metal detector himself. A rude shock awaited him as the bag had vanished.

“He immediately informed the security personnel and also made a PCR call. A case was registered at Kashmere Gate Metro Station. After scanning CCTV footage, investigators found out that a youth fled with the bag using sleight of hand,” the officer added. Police are on the lookout for him.
