A 24-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband in Geeta Colony area of East Delhi following her refusal to hand him over the money she had received from her brother on Raksha Bandhan that she was saving up for her daughter’s vaccination dose.

The incident occurred on Monday when the woman, identified as Ravneet Kaur, returned to her husband’s place from her parental home in Rajouri Garden after celebrating Raksha Bandhan. She lived with her husband, Paramjeet Singh (28), at Rani Garden area of Geeta Colony. The couple has a two-month-old daughter.

“When Ravneet returned home on Monday evening, Paramjeet asked her to give Rs 1,500 which she had got from her brother on Raksha Bandhan as gift. The woman refused to do so, which led to a heated argument between the couple and in a fit of rage, the husband strangled his wife to death,” said a police officer.

One of the neighbours made a PCR call on hearing loud arguments between the couple. When a police team reached the spot, Ravneet’s body was found on the floor. There were strangulation marks on her neck. Paramjeet had fled from the spot. He was later arrested from Rani Garden area. He earlier used to run a travel agency but had to wind up after financial losses. He had taken loans from friends and family, and was mired in gambling debts. During interrogation, he confessed to having strangled his wife. The victim’s family has further alleged that their daughter was continuously harassed by her husband for dowry and this has been the reason why he had killed her. “A case of murder has been registered in this regard and further investigation is on,” the officer added.
