Sibling rivalry turned ugly when a 27-year-old man was allegedly bludgeoned to death by his younger brother at their rented accommodation at North Delhi’s Burari area in the wee hours of Sunday.

According to police, the deceased identified as Hitesh Kumar Verma had been living with his brother Himanshu (23) in Delhi for the past two years. Police said the fight broke out after the victim, a Sanskrit professor at a college, had asked his younger brother, a post graduate student at the Delhi University, to leave the house as he had invited his girlfriend.

Police said they received a PCR call at around 3 am, one hour after the incident had taken place. The team immediately rushed to his house, where Himanshu allegedly cooked up a story that two men had barged inside their house and murdered his brother. They said he had hidden the weapon of offence under his bed, which was later seized by them.

A police official said once Hitesh got a job here, he called his brother to the city so that he can pursue his post graduation from the Delhi University.

Police said the duo had been living away from their family in Jhansi and went to visit them every two months.

Himanshu (23) told police that two months after he shifted to Delhi, Hitesh met a girl, after which they started meeting each other quite often. Hitesh at first hid his friendship with the girl from his younger brother, as he feared that his brother might share the same with their parents in Jhansi.

However once Himanshu became suspicious, he allegedly started asking his brother about the girl, who in turn shared that he was dating the girl for  some time and asked him to cooperate.

When Himanshu was arrested, he disclosed that Hitesh started taking advantage of the same and started asking him to stay outside the house for a few hours as his girlfriend would be visiting him.

Police said the victim told police that this used to happen once a week earlier but later started to happen every day.

lately, Hitesh started asking Himanshu to stay out for a day or two so that he could spend time with his girlfriend.

During sustained interrogation, Himanshu told the cops that he was asked to leave the house at 1.30 am on Monday, but he refused to do so as he had nowhere to go in the cold weather. But when his elder brother started to argue with him, he threw a dumbbell at him, following which he fell.

When Hitesh started to resist, Himanshu pinned him down and kept hitting him with the dumbbell, until he became unconscious.

“During sustained investigation, Himanshu broke down and confessed to his crime,” said a senior police official.

Police said a case under section 302 (murder) has been registered. Further investigation is underway.
