In a shocking incident, a 46-year-old man burned himself to death in North Delhi’s Shastri Nagar on Sunday, police said. Police discovered the body after the deceased's neighbour informed a police control room (PCR) regarding foul smell emanating along with smoke coming out of his residence. A suicide note was recovered from the house, police said.

According to police, a PCR call was received at around 9 am on Sunday at Sarai Rohilla Police Station regarding a fire at a residence in Shastri Nagar. "On reaching the spot, police staff found that there was smoke coming out of a room in the second floor of the residence," said the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Harender Singh.

"The room was found to be locked from inside, police staff broke the lock and entered the room where a person was lying on the floor near the bathroom and was severely burnt," he added.

"The body was taken to Hindu Rao Hospital by CATS ambulance where the he was declared brought dead. The body has been sent for post mortem. The deceased was identified as Naveen Kumar Gupta (46). He was living alone in Shastri Nagar since 2015, but his family belonged to Chandini Chowk in Delhi and the ancestral property was sold many years back," Singh said.

Police said the deceased was a divorcee and his parents and elder brother had passed away earlier. He is survived by two of his sisters living in Delhi.

"The spot was inspected by the North district crime team and a suicide note has been recovered from the spot and has been taken into police custody," Singh said, adding, that they are still investigating the matter and are waiting for the postmortem reports.
