Posing as a bank employee, the accused first called the customers of the bank and then procured all the details from them. The Police have recovered the details of the customers from the accused. The Delhi Police is now probing the role of a bank employee in Delhi and Mumbai in connection with the case.

Police said that the accused has been identified as Sanjay alias Sanju (21) and he was arrested on Tuesday morning from Andheri West Mumbai. The accused told the police that he was working with one Direct Selling Agent (DSA) in Mumbai and he stole the credit card data of 5,000 customers of ICICI Bank from his home. “After stealing the data, he first saved it in his laptop and then started calling all the customers posing as a bank employee. He then approached the employer of a factory situated in Ulhas Nagar, Mumbai and informed them that he had a contract with the electricity company and he can provide them a good discount. After getting the electricity bill of `10,000, he took cash amount of `7,000 from them and deposited `10,000 by using credit card of someone,” a senior police officer said.

The arrest was made following on the complaint of one of the customers of ICICI bank, Abhay Shrivastav, who approached the Connaught Place Police station on April 3 and informed them about the credit card fraud. He told the police that on April 2 someone from ICICI bank had called him and informed him that an online transaction had been made using his credit card details.

“He asked some password regarding details from the victim on the pretext of blocking his card. But, after around four hours, the victim got a message that `44,000 had been spent from his card,” the officer added.

Investigations reveal that the credit card data of 5,000 customers of ICICI Bank was stolen by a bank employee, who worked for around one year with them and then left the job.

“Investigators started tracing him and in the meantime, came to know that the transactions were made by the accused from Mumbai. Accused had paid the huge electricity bills of several factories and after tracing the location of accused, he was arrested by the Delhi Police,” the officer added.
