A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing cash of around Rs 2.8 lakh from the ATM of Punjab National Bank in East Delhi's Mandawali area.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Ajay Kumar, said that the accused has been identified as Sanjeev alias Sanjay and he has completed his BCom from Delhi University.
“Sanjeev used to first conduct a recce along with one of his accomplice to identify the ATM machine that they would target. Hunt is on to nab the absconding person,” he added.
“The incident came to light around 2.15 am on Monday when security guard Ramesh Dubey, who was sleeping outside the ATM, heard some voice from the ATM machine. He found that the shutter of the entrance gate was half shut and one bike-borne assailant was standing outside the entrance gate,” Kumar said.
As soon as security guard got up, the man guarding the machine fled from the spot. “The guard immediately opened the shutter and found that vault of the ATM had been cut with a gas cutter. Sanjeev had opened the ATM machine and was transferring the cash in his gunny bag. The accused threatened the security guard by showing him a screw driver and also managed to escape,” he added.
The security guard then raised an alarm and informed the local police about the incident. One of the accused was apprehended and the cash was recovered from his possession.
