A 25-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly threatened his divorced wife that he would disfigure her face by throwing acid if she remarried. He tried to hurl acid at her but could not succeed as the family members of estranged wife. The incident was reported from Chandni Mahal area on Sunday morning.
According to the police the incident was reported around 5 am. The woman resides with her family in Chandni Mahal area and her marriage has been fixed. The accused identified as Mohammad Shariq had married the victim in 2008. The victim who was fed up with his drug addiction divorced him in 2011. The accused reached the victim’s residence on Sunday morning as he got to know that she would be marrying someone else. Infuriated with this Shariq tried to throw acid on her face and also told her that he will leave scars all over her face if she married someone else. He even misbehaved with her. The parents of the victim who heard the commotion reached outside their residence and overpowered him.
They immediately informed the police. The police reached the spot in no time and the accused was taken into preventive custody. “Based on the victim’s complaint a case under Section 458, 354A and 506 under Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Chandni Mahal police station. Further investigations are underway,” said a police official.
Shariq is a habitual offender too as he was released from the Tihar Prisons around 10 days back. He was lodged in the jail in connection with a robbery case in Jama Masjid area.
