Months after a 26-year-old Uzbek woman was allegedly raped, Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested the man who was hiding in Mumbai. The 26-year-old Uzbek national was allegedly raped by the 34-year-old Sonu alias Jagjeet Singh in South Delhi’s Mehrauli area in March earlier this year.

Chinmoy Biswal, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) said, “We have arrested Sonu alias Jagjeet Singh from Matunga in Mumbai on June16.”

The senior police officer added that “since the rape case was registered, the accused was absconding.

Based on technical surveillance, Sonu was nabbed. He met the victim through a common friend. After the arrest of Sonu, he was brought to Delhi from Mumbai on transit remand and has been sent to judicial custody.”

In April, police received information that the Uzbek woman was allegedly trafficked and raped by the youth who she claimed had held her captive at a house in Mehrauli for the past six months.

In her complaint, the woman stated that the youth, identified as Sonu, had lured her to India on the pretext of providing her a job but had been sexually assaulting her since then. He had also seized her passport and forced her into prostitution.

The woman claimed that she had met Sonu over a social networking site. He posed as the CEO of a private firm and offered the woman a job in his company. However, when she reached Delhi, he took her to a house in Mehrauli and locked her up for a few days.

Sonu then forced himself on her and threatened her with dire consequences if she tried escaping from the house. The woman, after six months, managed to contact a friend on Facebook who suggested her to contact a lawyer. She then registered a complaint at Mehrauli Police station with the help of the lawyer.
