MAMC student hangs self

A second-year student of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) allegedly ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room.

The incident was reported at 1.30 pm on Tuesday after Police Control Room (PCR) received a call. Meanwhile investigators said that Deep Jyoti, a final year student of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), had been depressed for some time and took the extreme step.

A senior police officer of the Central district said that Deep Jyoti was staying in Room No. 9 in the girls’ hostel of MAMC. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan by one her mates who had come to call her for lunch. Deep Jyoti was reportedly allotted a single-room accommodation in the hostel. Her parents live in the Sultanpuri area of Outer Delhi.

“The parents were inconsolable when conveyed the tragic news of their daughter’s suicide. Their daughter had worked hard at cracking the entrance examination. They had never imagined they would have to receive their daughter’s body,” said a relative.

Deep Jyoti’s parents reportedly told police that she was depressed but did not show suicidal tendencies. The body has been sent for post-mortem and an inquest has been conducted. Autopsy report is awaited. A clearer picture would emerge after report is available to police.
