A fire broke out at around six tea and snack shops opposite Amity University in Sector 125, Noida, on Saturday afternoon. The flames spread rapidly through the tin-shed shops. Small LPG cylinders were heard exploding, triggering panic at the scene. During firefighting and rescue operations, a man was found unconscious. He was taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The deceased was identified as Sahil Sharma. The police have sent the body for a post-mortem.
A plume of black smoke from the fire was visible from around 2 km away. People recorded videos of the incident from nearby buildings, which later went viral on social media. Around 20 minutes after receiving the alert, five fire engines reached the spot and began firefighting operations.
According to local media reports, a massive explosion that occurred in a commercial building near Gate Number 2 of Amity University caused the fire. The university has several restaurants and tea shops, and the police confirmed that the fire was caused by an LPG cylinder exploding in one of the shops around noon. Eyewitnesses confirmed to local media that the fire was so intense that several LPG cylinders exploded one after another.
The rapidly spreading fire reportedly caused cylinders in the other shops to explode. The explosion’s severity shook the entire surrounding area. Video footage shows black smoke billowing into the sky due to the fire as people run for cover.
Pradeep Kumar, Chief Fire Officer of Noida, said, “We have found a large number of LPG cylinders inside. We are currently addressing this issue and conducting search and rescue operations to check whether anyone is trapped.” Upon receiving information about the incident, fire brigade vehicles brought the fire under control after a significant effort. Police and fire department teams then conducted a cooling operation and search at the scene. During the search, officials recovered the body of an unidentified man, which has been sent for post-mortem examination.
