Trends and enthusiasm in East Delhi lok Sabha seat appeared heavily tilted towards the lotus symbol. There was overwhelming support for Narendra Modi as voters who did not even know the names of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate rooted for Modi. Division of Muslim votes in East Delhi lok Sabha seat also appears to have worked in favour of BJP. There were long queues in a majority of polling stations as youth, middle aged men and women and senior citizens could be seen waiting patiently for their turn to vote. The mood among voters suggested that Maheish Girri of the BJP was far ahead of his two nearest rivals — Rajmohan Gandhi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Sandeep Dikshit of the Congress. According to the data compiled by the Election Commission (EC), there was 65 per cent voting in this parliamentary constituency.
The general mood among the voters was to vote for change and that reflected in the support for Modi. BJP gained at the expense of AAP that has lost much of its sheen after the hasty exit from the Government. AAP had taken away Congress votes in the Assembly elections but it lost a majority of them after the dismal
performance of Arvind Kejriwal Government. Ideally the votes should have gone back to the Congress but it was not the case as a phenomenon called Narendra Modi had stepped into the picture. The voters that drifted away from AAP fell into the lap of the BJP. What is more significant is the fact that BJP managed to wean away voters of the slums who had pitched for AAP in last Assembly polls.
Vishwas Nagar, Shahdara, Krishna Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, laxmi Nagar, Patparganj, Mandawali, Jangpura, Okhla and Trilokpuri Assembly segments registered brisk polling. Anti-incumbency factor weighed heavily against Congress as its two-term MP from East Delhi Sandeep Dikshit lagged behind despite having done so much for the constituency. He changed the landscape of East Delhi but inflation undid his developmental work. The biggest jolt for the Congress came from the Okhla Assembly seat that houses Jamia Millia, Batla House, Zakir Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Taimur Nagar and Abul Fazal Enclave Muslim dominated areas. Voters were divided between AAP and the Congress. It looked like AAP and Congress sharing the spoils and thus giving advantage to the BJP. Political pundits say that division of Muslim votes will help the BJP.
