The Enforcement Department of New Delhi Municipal Corporation has suspended the licence of 31 street vendors for a period of three months in Janpath mini-market area after they were found violating norms.

The NDMC conducted a survey across the mini-market at Janpath to identify authorised street vendors and keep a check on norms. The Department found 31 vendors who had rented out their space to someone else

Having taken cognizance of the illegal activities, the NDMC has issued notices and have also suspended the tehbazari for three months.

It may be noted that tehbazari is only given to the downtrodden and underprivileged people of society. These people have the advantage of selling cheaper goods because they are not having the liability of selling the goods with service tax and value added tax.

According to the senior NDMC official, now tehbazari has become commercial with a showroom like display and it is being used as important avenue to earn money by subletting the same to unauthorised persons. “Subletting is prohibited as per terms and conditions as it is against the philosophy of tehbazari,” said the official.

“Recently, NDMC  has noticed 31 cases of sub letting at Janpath lane Mini Market and Masonic lane.  Showcase notices were given to them and NDMC found that the person on the site is different from that of original tehbazari. Most of them have given on the partnership basis,” the official said.

“The NDMC is legally responsible to enforce the terms and conditions of tehabazri license,” Rajshekhar, the Enforcement Director of NDMC told The Pioneer.
