After Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s intervention, lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday promised to take “strict action” against the culprits involved in the Delhi University violence and rape threats to Kargil martyr’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur.
Kejriwal had met the l-G and sought the arrest of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists over alleged involvement in the recent Ramjas College clash and rape threats to Kaur.
After meeting the l-G, Kejriwal told reporters outside Raj Niwas that the l-G had promised him of “strict action” against the culprits involved in both the cases. “I told the l-G that a pattern is emerging in Delhi campuses where these ABVP activists themselves raise anti-India slogans and then resort to violence in the name of nationalism,” Kejriwal said.
Referring to last year’s incident at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Kejriwal said that it has been two years after the anti-national slogans were raised in the campus, “But still the real offenders have not been arrested.” “No one has been arrested in connection with the raising of anti-national slogans in JNU because if police arrest the culprits, it will be revealed that the ABVP members were involved in the case,” the Delhi Chief Minister alleged.
Talking about the alleged rape threats to Kaur, the Chief Minister praised Delhi Police for registering an FIR in connection with it and said that the culprits should be arrested with immediate effect.
Taking a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kejriwal charged the party of doing politics of hatred in the country. “The BJP has resorted to politics of goondaism. All parents are concerned for the safety of their children studying in the educational campuses,” he said,
The l-G also took to Twitter ensuring a strict immediate action against the violators. “Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi met me at Raj Niwas.. Have assured him that strict immediate action will be taken against those violating law,” Baijal wrote.
In a letter submitted to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and spokesperson Atishi Marlena and legislators Alka lamba and Sarita Singh sought action against the ABVP for the violence in the Delhi campus on 22 February. “We urge you to take cognisance in this shameful matter and to arrest these ABVP goondas who perpetrated violence on women in the garb of nationalism. Amulyaji, we are sure you will appreciate the fact that gender equality and gender rights are non-comprisable,” the letter reads.
