Lawyers who abstained from work in all six district courts in national Capital following the clashes between them and Delhi Police that occurred at Tis Hazari Court complex on November 2, called off their strike on Friday.
The Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations took the decision in a meeting of the office bearers after the Delhi High Court order directed the lawyers to resolve the matter.
“We respect the order of the High Court so the abstinence from work is suspended, work to be resumed from Saturday. Our fight for Advocates Protection Act will continue,” said Mahavir Sharma, chairman of the organisation.
On November 2, at the Tis Hazari Courts Complex after a parking dispute between an on-duty policeman and a lawyer erupted, at least 20 security personnel and several advocates were injured. The protests triggered more on November 4 when a police constable was attacked by a group of lawyers outside Saket District Court. The lawyers in all six district courts including Rohini Court, Saket, Tis Hazari and Karkardoma Court went on strike demanding action against police personnel involved in the clashes.
Ordering a judicial inquiry by one of its retired judges into the clash, the Delhi High court at a special sitting on November 3 suspended a police official and transferred two senior police officials during pendency of the investigations.
The Delhi High Court on November 3, directed the Delhi Police commissioner to transfer Special Commissioner Sanjay Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), North Delhi, Harendra Singh during pendency of the investigation. It had also asked not to take coercive action against the lawyers for the FIRs filed in the Tis Hazari court clash.
