He wanted Rs10,000 that was promised to him for the job but his friend later refused to pay him the agreed amount. Angry over the betrayal, a 32-year-old labourer kidnapped the 10-year-old son of his friend who had backtracked on his promise to pay him the amount.

The kidnapper called up the family of the child and demanded a ransom of Rs10,000 only. Investigators were stumped over this paltry demand as ransom and soon tracked down the caller and rescued the boy from Modi Nagar area. The boy has been restored to his parents. The story came out after the kidnapped narrated his tale to the officials of Mandawali police station in East district.

Police said that the accused persons have been identified as Dilchand, the main kingpin and his associate Sanjay. They work as daily wagers and reside in Mandawali area. “The arrest was made following on the complaint of a store owner, Rinku Rai, who lived with his family in Mandawali area,” a senior police officer said.

The incident came to light on April 11 when the younger son of Rai was abducted by Dilchand from outside his school. “Dilchand made a ransom call of Rs10,000 and asked him to deliver the amount on April 12,” he added. The victim’s father immediately approached the East district police.

After registering the case of abduction at Mandawali police station, several teams were formed under the supervision of DCP (east) Prabhakar. “Investigators had scanned all the phone numbers and with the help of technical surveillances, they traced the location of kidnappers at Modi Nagar, Ghaziabad,” an officer said.

A raid was conducted on Friday morning and police rescued the victim. Both the accused were apprehended.

“After the interrogation, Dilchand told the investigators that few months back, the elder daughter of Rai was kidnapped and Rai asked him to come with him in tracing the girl. He promised him that he will give him Rs10,000 for the job but after the task, Rai just went back on his words and refused to pay him the agreed amount. Dilchand approached Rai several times for the money but Rai was not ready to give him even a single penny. An exasperated Dilchand then hatched the plan to abduct Rai’s minor son and exact his revenge and also get the money back,” officer added.
