Labourer electrocuted at under-construction site at LNJP hosp

In yet another case of electrocution, a labourer was electrocuted while working at an under-construction building on the premises of the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital  on Sunday morning.

After the victim got the electric shock, his co-worker took him to the emergency ward of the LNJP hospital around 9 am where he was declared brought dead, a senior police officer said.  The incident site was inspected by forensic experts and a crime team of the Delhi Police, the officer said, adding that necessary legal action will be initiated.

The deceased has been identified as Sujeet Kumar, a resident of Samastipur in Bihar, the police said.

According to a senior doctor of the LNJP Hospital, the labourer got electrocuted at the construction site of a 22-storeyed building that is being built between the GB Pant and LNJP hospitals.

The site is owned by the Public Works Department and once the building is ready, it will serve as the the mother and child block of LNJP hospital, the doctor added.

Taking a dig at the Arvind Kejriwal government,  Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said the electrocution incident shows “the callousness of Delhi Government in running its hospitals like the LNJP and GB Pant”.

He pointed out that a man died of electrocution on the premises of the LNJP Hospital, while an alleged rape and assault case was reported from GB Pant Hospital in May where the woman succumbed to injuries.

Meanwhile, Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Atishi on Sunday urged Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to take action against officers whose negligence led to the death of the labourer on the premises of the LNJP Hospital. In a letter to LG, PWD minister said services in Delhi have been in the hands of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for the last 8 years.  “But no action has been taken against any officer for wrongdoing or negligence. Years of inaction by the LG against negligent and corrupt officers is why today such incidents are happening.

“Till the time you have the power of services, you will have to take immediate action against these negligent officers,” Atishi said.

The minister further said due to their negligence, two lives have been lost, you must break your silence and take immediate action, otherwise the people of Delhi will continue to suffer like this. “Lack of accountability of LG is the reason why control over officers needs to be with the elected Government,” Atishi added.

Ajit Sharma, 51, was returning home after dropping a passenger in east Delhi’s Bhajanpura on Friday when his auto-rickshaw got stuck in a ditch filled with rainwater near Wazirabad. When he got out to push the vehicle, he fell in the ditch and drowned.

“Despite these incidents, you are sitting silently. It has been two days since an autorickshaw driver lost his life due to the negligence of officers, but you have neither taken any action nor have had the courage to say anything on this matter,” she said.
