The Delhi Police is yet to arrest the kingpin of the ICICI bank fraud case, but it has claimed to have solved the case with the arrest of a 31-year-old con man, Raju Tevar from Mumbai, around 10 days ago.
The police are still looking for the kingpin and his associates. Initially, Raju had told the police that he had stolen the data of the customers from main culprit Zakir. Raju told the police that he had duped 4,500 ICICI bank credit card customers of Rs two crore in more than a year, which he spent lavishly on parties and night clubs. Police recovered data of around 30,000 customers from his laptop.
Investigators claimed that Raju stole details of ICICI bank customers from Zakir's laptop. Zakir, along with his girlfriend, was working with the bank. They quit their jobs after stealing the data. Police said the arrested Raju is a native of Ambarnath in Thane. "During investigation, police learnt that the credit card was used to make a payment of electricity bills to the Maharashtra District Electricity Board company and to Pay TM mobile company. The transactions were being made by a Reliance Mobile," DCP (New Delhi district) SBS Tyagi said.
Raju was arrested when he came to collect bills on behalf of the company from a local shopkeeper. Talking about his modus operandi, police said Raju would call and inform them that a transaction had been made without their knowledge.
The customer would get flustered but Raju, pretending to be a concerned employee, would offer to block the card by eliciting the customer’s details. While he kept the customer on hold, by playing the ICICI caller tune, which he had copied onto his phone, he would change the credit card PIN. The customer would get a message that the PIN had been changed. Within seconds, a transaction would be made from the account.
