In a swift operation, East District police rescued a one-month-old baby girl kidnapped from a Delhi hospital  within five hours and arrested two girls. The women were arrested from  Ghaziabad after a police team of Kalyanpuri police station traced their movements, police said on Wednesday.

Police said the accused Poonam, 22 and her sister, Ruchi, 19, residents of Khoda colony in Ghaziabad, were arrested on Tuesday. The baby was reunited with the mother on Wednesday.

“The infant was kidnapped by Poonam and Ruchi on Tuesday from lal Bahadur Shastri (lBS) Hospital (in east Delhi),” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East district, Pankaj Kumar Singh said.

“Poonam and Ruchi befriended the infant's mother and started playing with the baby. When her mother went to get water, they kidnapped the minor.  In a CCTV footage, they were seen hiring an auto outside the hospital,” Singh added. After intensive monitoring/analysis CCTV footage, two suspicious women were spotted moving towards one of the exits. They were seen taking an auto. All auto drivers were questioned about these two women and some of them were able to identify a local auto driver Azad who had left with the two women and a baby”, DCP said.

Azad was contacted by the staff and being a good Samaritan, Azad came in the middle of his peak business time to do his duty to help the police. He volunteered to take the police team to the spot where the duo were dropped which was in Khoda colony of neighbuoring Ghaziabad. Upon searching all the houses of the suspected building in Khoda colony, the two women identified as Poonam and Ruchi along with the baby girl were found on the second floor. The baby girl was finally rescued safely and the two women were apprehended.

During questioning, Poonam told police she could not give birth to a child even after four years of marriage. They planned to kidnap the baby after noticing her mother was tired as she was waiting at the hospital since morning for the baby's check-up, the DCP added.
