Kashmiri students in a local educational institute were beaten and ragged by the seniors. The victim students alleged that the institute management did not initiate any action against the accused students despite several telephonic, written and oral complaints.

A 22-year-old Kashmiri student of HR Institute of Technology on Meerut Road was allegedly beaten up by a group of seniors when he screamed after suffering an electric shock in the hostel’s washroom. According to police, the incident took place late on Tuesday night when Mohd Omar, who is pursuing BCA course, was taking a bath in the hostel washroom.

Following the incident, around 100 Kashmiri students studying at the institute staged protest against the assault and demanded strict action against the seniors.

“When Omar was taking a bath in the institute’s hostel washroom, he suddenly got an electric shock from a wire following which he loudly screamed. This angered his seniors, who were preparing for their exams,” police said. “The victim alleged that after hearing his screams, his seniors, who were 2nd and 3rd year students of B Tech, started beating him,” the police said.

During a heated argument, the other students too took sides and a clash took place on Wednesday in which the Kashmiri students alleged that about 50 students sustained injuries. The institute management did not respond to the phone call, oral complaints and seems prejudiced to favour native students, alleged the Kashmiri students on condition of anonymity.

In the meantime, on the SOS call to the parents in Kashmir and their further calls to the J&K Police, the J&K CID cell in Delhi acted, visited the institute and had deliberations with the local police. After the visit from J&K and local police to the institute, the management constituted a 12-member committee to ensure the security and safety of Kashmiri students and a patrolling van was deployed outside the institute. The Institute management said that if any student is found guilty, strict action would be taken in this regard.

“Our officers have taken an undertaking from the institute for the safety and security of the Kashmiri students. Hence, there stands no threat to them. Even if they are inclined to lodge any complaint, the police are ready to initiate legal action against any offender, whosoever he is,” said Ghaziabad SSP Sachi Ghildiyal.
