Judicial custody of ex-CM Dikshit's son-in-law extended

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's son-in-law was on Thursday sent to a day's judicial custody by a Delhi court, which will pronounce its order on Friday on his bail plea in a case of theft and misappropriation of his wife's property.

Syed Mohammad Imran, who was arrested from Bangalore and brought to the city  on transit remand, was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma after expiry of his two-days police custody and the court remanded him in judicial custody till Friday, saying enough time was given to police.

The court reserved its order for Friday after hearing arguments of the accused and the prosecution. After the court rejected police plea seeking extension of his custodial interrogation, the accused moved a bail plea saying that it was matrimonial dispute which has been given a colour of theft and cheating. He also said that his mother was suffering from serious illness.

"Personal anger of the complainant has been used in the FIR out of vengeance. The police are bypassing legal procedures...I am being victimised," Imran said. The counsel appearing for complainant, however, opposed the bail plea saying that offences were very serious and there were charges against the accused that he attempted to murder his wife.

During the proceedings, the court rejected police plea seeking extension of police custody of the accused, saying, "In the considered view of this court, no ground is made out to further extend the police custody as ample time was given to police."

Thereafter, police moved an application seeking 14-day judicial custody of Imran, saying that if granted bail, he is likely to tamper with the evidence and intimidate the witnesses and his custody is needed to prevent him from committing further offence.

Police said Imran did not cooperate during the probe and during his two-days of police custody raids were conducted and four shawls and some ornaments were recovered from his possession.

Dikshit's daughter latika and Imran had got married in 1996, but were living separately for the last 10 months. In her complaint filed in June, latika had alleged that Imran's attitude had changed towards her and had become aggressive and rude after her mother lost in the Delhi Assembly polls.
