Delhi University is one of the most sought-after universities in the country and this fact is testified every year by the whooping average of 2.5 lakh applications the university receives during the admission months. High cut-offs for graduate courses add to the testimony to DU being the most preferred university for many. But, beyond the rat race of the Delhi University admissions and the pressure of academics, lies a campus life full of surprises. Delhi University, with its extracurricular activities and cultural events, promises to be a joyride and ensures that burning the midnight’s oil was worth it.
EXTRACURRICUlARS
Delhi University takes extracurricular activities very seriously. There are number of student societies for almost any skill you can think of: from fine arts, photography, debating and editorial to music, dance and dramatics. These societies not only act as confidence-building platforms but also provide a sense of belonging to the students. Hindu College’s dramatics society IBTIDA stands out among the rest. Kamla Nehru College is popular for its trend setting fashion society GlITZ. Also well known are dance societies of IP College and Guru Gobind Singh College namely AFROZA and MISBA respectively. SRCC’s photography society ClICK is among the top. “I feel that being part of society gives one ample amount of exposure and also enhances one’s personality,” said a member of Alaap, the Indian Music society of IP College. However, a student needs to prove his worth by qualifying several rounds to become a member of these eminent societies and be prepared to slog hours for practice even on Sundays.
Other extracurricular activities include TEDx, Model United Nation and Inter department/college quizzes and competitions.
FESTIVAlS
The months of February and March are loaded with entertainment and excitement of the fest season. With a myriad of themes and competitions, ambrosial food and spectacular performances, college fests add to the aura of the university. Be it Jesus and Mary College’s MONTAGE, Hindu College’s MECCA or SRCC’s CROSSROADS, these festivals surely are worth attending. Such celebrations also boast of impressive star nights with celebrities such as Farhan Akhtar, Atif Aslam and Sunidhi Chauhan, to name a few.
Apart from this, on occasions of Diwali and Holi, several colleges organise melas with number of stalls which are put up and managed by students.
EATERIES
A plus point for students studying at Delhi University is the innumerable pocket-friendly eating joints at markets like Satya Niketan, Kamla Nagar and Hudson lane which act as the perfect hangout. Some of the famous ones, include the all-time favourite Big Yellow Door, QD’s, Chache Di Hatti, Rico’s and Woodbox Café. From humble chhole kulche to splendid pasta’s, these eateries have it all. And the plus point is that they won’t shake your budget.
ElECTIONS
The DUSU and NSUI elections have always been a high profile campus event that gives a chance to young aspiring politicians to learn the practicalities of the world of politics. The election season is marked with free sops for all and cajouling for votes. During this time, pamphlets and posters of candidates can be seen in and around the university area.
To experience academics, administration, politics, music, song and dance and different people, Delhi University is the place to be. It’s going to be a roller coaster ride but one that will surely be memorable.
