Delhi Police has registered an FIR after Jawaharlal Nehru Univeristy Students Union (JNUSU) president Mohit Kumar Pandey along with other office holders allegedly manhandled workers who were installing CCTV cameras at the entrance of the Brahmaputra hostel inside the JNU campus on Friday last.

JNU administration had started the process of installing CCTV cameras across the campus following a court order but JNUSU office bearers opposed it and started roughing up the workers, said a police officer.

The Chief Security Officer of the Jawaharlal Nehru University has lodged a complaint at Vasant Kunj North police station and a case under section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 427 (Mischief causing damage) and 379 (Punishment for theft) has been registered, the police officer said.

The JNU administration had roped in system analyst Satyendra, graphics analyst Deepak, along with a security in charge Naveen Yadav and three other workers for the installation of CCTV cameras.

In their complaint, they claimed that as soon they reached the corridor outside the Brahmaputra hostel on Friday last, several students reached the spot and started sloganeering. JNUSU president Mohit Pandey and other office holders of JNUSU, General Secretary Satrupa Chakravarty and union members Amal Pullarkkat, Dileep Yadav and Abhay arrived there started arguing with the workers.

later, the argument turned into a minor scuffle, and Mohit and other union members allegedly dismantled a CCTV camera outside the hostel and forced the workers to give up the installation work. The workers claimed that they were pushed around by the students and one of them was hurt. The students also pulled down the ladder used for installation work and Mohit went outside the main gate and dismantled a CCTV camera, which the workers have claimed was worth Rs32,000.

The CCTV installation team left the site and informed the varsity administration about the incident. The JNU administration lodged an official compliant and an FIR has been lodged. No arrest has been made and the probe is going on, said the South district police officer.
