Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students staged a protest at University Grants Commission demanding revocation of the May 5, 2016 regulations on the new admission process. Students in huge numbers gathered on Friday to protest near ITO.
“The protest has been taken to oppose the new admission process of Mphil/Phd…if it will be amended the changes in VIVA and interview will disturb the admission criteria and then no one would be able to smoothly take the admission in higher education at JNU,” the former general secretary of JNU Student’s Union (JNUSU) told The Pioneer.
He said that the issue is now in the hands of the JNU Vice-Chancellor of M Jagadesh Kumar and a meeting is promised by the former with the JNUSU President Mohit Pandey on January 30.
Naga further added that the higher authorities were only ignoring the students’ concerns. “Higher authorities have already taken the decision for the admissions and now when the students are going against them, they are just doing rotational talks to dissolve the matter’.
The students protesting expressed that they will not rest until the matter is resolved by the administration. Many students said that if the new admission process was adapted by the university, it would not only affect the goodwill of the system but also weaken the entire process of admissions in the varsity.
JNU has been continuously in news over a range of controversies. This week, the Proctor who was leading the high level enquiries of different issues including the case of missing student Najeeb Ahmed resigned citing reasons of “disagreement” with the JNU administration.
