A Delhi court has granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Anmol Ratan, who was arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly raping a 28-year-old PhD scholar at one of the university's hostel in August last year.
The court asked Ratan to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 with the two surety of like amount.
Senior advocate Rajiv Mohan, who was appearing for Ratan had argued that there were contradictions in the allegations levelled by the victim. Earlier, the court had denied bail to Ratan.
Advocate Abhimanu Kampani, Priyanka Singh and Satbir Singh Gill who were also appearing for Ratan, said that this time the court allowed their move and granted their client regular bail.
The court had on October 14 last year rapped the Delhi Police for failing to file forensic reports, in connection to the case, on time despite repeated warnings and had asked police as to why cost should not be imposed on them for such inaction.
According to the chargesheet, the victim had written on her Facebook wall that she wanted to watch a movie and had asked if anyone had its CD. Ratan had then messaged her saying he had a copy.
later, he picked her up on August 20, 2016, on the pretext of giving the CD, took her to Brahamputra Hostel where he stayed, allegedly offered her a spiked drink and raped her, the chargesheet said.
On August 21, 2016, the victim lodged a rape case at Vasant Kunj (North) police station against him. Ratan, an All India Student's Association (AISA) activist, was also expelled from the association after being accused of rape. He had been lodged behind the bars for almost a year.
