A 13-year-old minor girl was reportedly being raped by her brother-in-law, for the last two months in South Delhi’s Vasant Vihar. The victim studies in Class VIII of a Government school and had been living with the accused who is a Ph.D scholar in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The matter came to light on Saturday when the girl complained of stomach ache and was taken to a hospital where the doctors informed that the girl is two months pregnant. The victim was staying in a rented accommodation in Munirka village with the accused, who is the husband of her elder sister. A senior police official said that the wife of the accused is presently in Uttar Pradesh with her in-laws. “The victim was sent to the Capital to study and the accused was her guardian here. She was being raped continuously by her brother-in-law for the last two months but she could not muster the courage to complain about the abuse to her sister or anyone,” he said.
The police said that it was only when the girl complained of stomach cramps on Saturday and went to the hospital for medical counsel was her pregnancy confirmed. “After an examination, doctors reported her pregnancy to police. Following further investigation, she narrated the entire ordeal to police. No injury marks were found on her body. However, the medical exam has confirmed rape,” said a
police official. Since the girl is a minor, a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under Section 376 of IPC and the accused has been arrested. “Following her medical exam, her statement was recorded in the presence of representatives of an NGO. She was counselled and she corroborated her story in her statement. The victim’s family has also been informed,” the official added.
