Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) went an extra mile to felicitate Akashansh Gupta, a student with 95 per cent disability by arranging a “special” ceremony to celebrate his success on completion of his research degree.

On Monday, JNU Vice Chancellor Sudhir Kumar Sopory awarded Gupta with the PhD in the area of computer science. Former Commissioner of CCPD, Prassna Kumar Pincha and first blade runner of India, Major DP Singh were also present on the occasion.

Gupta is living with a disorder called Cerebral Palsy which makes movement difficult and also affects the speech of a person. But going against all odds, Gupta has completed a five-year long thesis under which he looked at “brain-computer interface”.

While talking to The Pioneer, Gupta said he was “extremely happy” for the support shown by the university and students. “I used to work six to eight hours daily. The way university organised this ceremony and students came forward has made me very happy,” he said. He expressed that his future plans are to get into academics and research.

Gupta’s friend and a research scholar at the JNU, Pragya Deora lauded him for doing exceptionally well and demanded that he should be offered with employment as soon as possible. “Now he has done academically so well, he should get a job. JNU usually does not have such ceremonies on felicitations but it was for Gupta’s impressive efforts that this ceremony was specially organised to felicitate him,” Deora added.
