JD(U) MP receives abusive messages on Twitter, files FIR

Janata Dal (United) Rajya Sabha MP Pawan K Verma, who was adviser to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and also an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, was receiving obscene, objectionable and abusive Twitter messages from an account in the name of one "Skdas00S" for the last one year. The MP had complained to Delhi Police on May 24, 2016 but no FIR was registered. When he kept receiving the messages, he again lodged a complaint last week and now an FIR has been registered by the Delhi Police cyber cell unit and investigation has been taken up.

Verma's complaint did not get much attention last year and he kept on getting obscene messages on his Twitter handle. Unable to take it anymore, the  MP lodged a complaint with Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, who immediately transferred the matter to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to register an FIR and start investigations.

Police sources said that on investigations the alleged Twitter account was being used by S Das and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the said handle was traced to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

"The MP was receiving obscene pictures, abuses and abusive lyrics of songs and also threats to his life from the alleged account. He has been receiving such messages on his Twitter inbox for over a year. We have started investigating the matter," said a senior police official.

The complainant told police, "I have been getting exceptionally abusive and threatening messages from a Twitter handle 'Skdas00S'. I would be grateful if the culprit is traced and necessary action taken under law against him or her. I would be also grateful if I am kept informed about the developments."

The MP also sent screenshots of the Twitter messages to police for the purpose of investigation. Based on the complaint of the MP, police registered a case under Section 294(B) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
