The Delhi Police Special Cell on Thursday arrested leader of the Uttar Pradesh’s Navnirman Sena Amit Jani in connection with a death threat to JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, conveyed through a letter which was recovered with a loaded gun in a bus operating on a route between an ISBT and the varsity’s campus.

“Jani was arrested from south Delhi’s Greater Kailash (GK-1) area on Thursday evening while he was coming back to a guest house he was residing in for a few days,” said an officer privy to the investigation. The Delhi High Court had earlier rejected Jani’s plea of interim bail and the Delhi Police was looking for Jani who was on run ever since the incident came to the fore.

On April 14, the Delhi Police recovered an abandoned bag containing a threatening letter and a pistol from a DTC bus enroute JNU. Jani had warned Kanhaiya of dire consequences if he not left JNU after the February 9 event on the campus where anti-India slogans were raised. Also, Jani had posted an intimidating video in his social media account.

Jani was arrested in 2012 after he smashed the statue of former UP chief minister Mayawati in lucknow.
