The upcoming interchange Metro station at Janakpuri has undergone a design change and will now be constructed as an underground station as part of the Delhi Metro Phase III. Earlier, it was planned to be an elevated station.
This station will be the first to provide interchanging facility in West Delhi. The operational Janakpuri West Metro station on the Dwarka to Noida Metro corridor (line 3) is being converted into an interchange station to provide additional connectivity to areas in South Delhi and Noida.
A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson said that at present, the Janakpuri West Metro station attracts approximately 15,000 commuters every day. These numbers are expected to jump significantly with the starting of the interchanging facility at the station. “About 53,700 additional commuters are expected to use the new interchange station by 2016. The station will be 15.7 m deep with two entry/exit points, one towards district centre and the other on the Najafgarh road,” he added.
“The underground station will come up in a park on the left side (while coming from the District Centre side) of the existing Janakpuri West station near Hilton Hotel. Concourse to concourse connectivity will also be provided between the two stations and escalators will connect the two concourses," said the spokesperson.
The upcoming Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden corridor will also act as a feeder for the currently operational Blue line as both the originating stations of this corridor — Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden are important interchange stations for the Noida line. “This new line will, therefore, significantly help in reducing congestion on line 3 as well as the Rajiv Chowk Metro station as the journey from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden by both the corridors, will almost take the same time," he concluded.
