Bank accounts & RuPay debit cards with insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh
Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Thursday formally launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) at Delhi Secretariat. It is believed that over four lakh people have been benefited from the scheme in the Capital. Under the schemes, the Government will ensure a bank account for everyone - with a special focus on poor and the aim to provide bank accounts to each household who are still devoid of the facility. For the total 17.8 million population of Delhi, 33 operating banks have recruited their 3,282 branches, which will organise camps and help in opening accounts. For opening the account, the desiring person should have either a Voter ID, job card, Aadhaar card or a certificate issued by the sarpanch.
Speaking on the occasion, Vardhan said that this is the biggest financial inclusion scheme taken up by any Government in India so far for the welfare of the poor and marginalised sections of the society. Each eligible account holder would be given a RuPay debit card with `1 lakh accident cover. In future, they would be covered by insurance and pension products also. The Health Minister also expressed hope that once a person is included in the mainstream of financial system, poor households would get benefits from various social welfare schemes directly in their accounts
Terming it a revolutionary scheme for urban poor, Delhi lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, who presided the function, said that the scheme lies at the core of our development philosophy of Sab Ka Sath Sab Ka Vikas. With a bank account, every household gains access to banking and credit facilities.
