The national Capital has seen the most number of cold wave days in January in at least a decade. The national Capital on Wednesday logged its eighth cold wave day in January, the most in the month in at least 12 years, according to data available on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) website. Sadarjung observatory, the city’s primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius, five notches less than the average for this time of the year. The city may also see light rain or drizzle towards Thursday night.

Delhi saw seven cold wave days in January 2020, while it did not record any such day last year. The city recorded an intense cold wave spell from January 5 to 9 this year, the second-longest in the month in a decade, according to the IMD data. Six cold wave days were recorded in 2013, data from the IMD shows. In January 2019, 2020, 2015, and 2014, there was one cold wave day each. In some years over the past decade, January has recorded no cold wave day at all, like in 2022, 2018, 2016, and 2012.
