Jamia Millia Islamia has bagged Rs 3 crores three major Renewable Energy Projects and Power Electronics from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for producing “cost efficient solar power conversion systems” up to five kilowatt capacity.

The project is to be headed by Ahteshamul Haque, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering who has already installed one kilowatt capacity solar power in another ongoing project of the Ministry.

“Power is the main issue of the common man these days and the problem is the high consumption with skyrocketing rates of electricity...in order to solve these problems we are coming up with solar system to minimise the cost and at the same time improve its usage in terms of efficiency and protection from faults. The main objective of these projects is to develop complete single phase solar energy conversion system of various ratings and features, which can be used by the common man and for industry applications. ,” Haque told The Pioneer.

Haque, with the team members, including Mphil, Btech and research students, installed one kilowatt capacity solar power at the terrace of the varsity’s Power Electronics laboratory which is generating 50 per cent electric load of power from the installed solar plant. In his new projects, he will be working on two units set-up designed for the MNRE which will further facilitate production of the solar power inverters and marketing.

“I will take more PhD students in this project and some more manpower would be provided by the Ministry for the research and development purpose. Everything would be worked out in our laboratory. The MNRE team visited the laboratory and looked at the current projects after which they decided to upgrade it with three more projects,” Haque added.

Some of the members working with Haque are employed by Tata Power. Haque who has earlier worked with the Power Electronics Research and Development Units and several multi-national companies would be applying for patents of the projects developed at the varsity.  His areas of research include power quality improvements, smart grids, wireless power communication, hybrid vehicles and electric traction.
