While underlining the institute’s achievements in the field of medical education, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University GN Qazi on Tuesday said that the University is going to introduce Masters in clinical courses. He said that for the purpose, additional 250 beds with 200 extra for various specialties for Master programmes will be added to the newly opened 350-bed hospital.

“It (350-bed hospital) went through a meticulous planning and execution. We divided the entire plan of establishing a Medical College, which was inaugurated by Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad last year, into three phases. The present 350-bed hospital is a state-of-art facility for training students at under-graduate level. We are adding 250 more beds and another 200 for various specialties in order to prepare ourselves for introducing Masters programme in Clinical subjects within foreseeable future,” Qazi stated.

Speaking on the management of funds spent on the advanced science courses which demand a lot of money, Qazi said that the institute spends approximately Rstwo lakh on each student doing medical professional course. “Our average fee comes to Rs60,000 per student and we spend some Rstwo lakh on each of them. An amount of Rs40, 000 comes from the UGC while the rest comes from Hamdard National Foundation. Our medical college is 100 per cent HNF funded and our focus remains on providing quality education,” the VC added.

He also added that Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences was the first non-profit minority institute that took to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Examination after starting MBBS last year. Qazi expresses complete satisfaction on taking the step and said it was a conscious decision. “We have consciously selected our students from NEET and it is not just for MBBS degree but for all our healthcare courses. Now that the Supreme Court has given its veridict on the NEET recently, we would like to share the experience of our institution. The quality of students in our courses shows that NEET will be the ideal medium by which we can serve the health sector with excellence. Our entire Academic Council was of the view; we should have a single test for professional education in healthcare. It can be the only credible one. With our inception it could be a benchmark for other private universities,” he said.
