Tuesday came as a rainy day for Delhiites as the city was drenched throughout the day with rain hitting early in the morning and continuing till late evening. The Capital, as usual, was predictably engulfed in traffic jams at several points. Moreover, the Met Department has predicted similar weather conditions to persist on Wednesday.
“Ayanagar received the maximum rainfall measuring 39.8 millimetres. Next was Palam where the rain gauge recorded 35.8 mm of rains. North Delhi received 22.4 mm while Safdarjung got 13 mm of rainfall. Unlike other days, lodhi road got the lowest rainfall amounting to 10.2 mm only,” said a Met official.
While, rain gauges measured 11.6 millimeters of rain from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, which was just moderately heavy, but enough to choke the drainage system and leave large areas swamped. The perennial problem of water logging in Monsoon led to traffic jams in several parts of the city including major intersections such as ITO, laxmi Nagar, Kashmere Gate, South Extension, Aashram Chowk, Moolchand Underpass, Nehru Place and Dhaula Kuan. However, the traffic police downplayed the issue.
“Traffic jams were reported from 25 points in the city including Azad Marg, Eidgah, Shanti Vana, Pul Prahaladpur, Gurudwara Nanakpura, Karola Mor among others. These jams were caused due to waterlogging but there were not too many of them as it was intermittent rain and not heavy showers,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.
On Tuesday, the temperature was recorded at 30.4 degree Celsius which was three degrees below normal for this part of the year and significantly down from Monday’s 34.3 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature was registered at 26 degree Celsius which was normal for this part of the year and 1.7 degrees below from the previous day’s 27.7 degree Celsius.
The weather reports have predicted a generally cloudy sky for Wednesday, with possibility of rains and thundershowers in some areas. The maximum and minimum are likely to remain at 32 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively.
