Intersectoral meeting held to contain dengue

Concerned over the rising number of cases of vector borne diseases in the national Capital, North Corporation’s Rohini Zone called an intersectoral meeting with various central and Delhi Government’s departments and institutions and issued a series of directions to contain the cases.

At least 348 cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi so far till now while 71 cases of malaria and nearly 148 cases of chikungunya have also been reported till August 21 this year, according to a report issued by civic bodies on Monday.

The meeting was chaired by Rohini Zone Deputy Commissioner Vivek Prakash and attended by district health officer Dr Pramod Verma and representatives from 140 organisations or institutions such as Delhi Development Authority, Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Transport Corporation, MTNL, social welfare and flood irrigation department.

Deputy Commissioner Vivek Prakash directed nodal teachers to ensure water storage tanks in all schools are covered as dengue mosquitoes breed in freshwater.

Prakash also directed officials of horticulture departments to repair all leakages in water hydrants already provided in the gardens and other green areas.

He also requested to depute one police personnel in each police station as the nodal officer to ensure that no breeding takes place in their premises. “The "Malkhanas" of most of the police stations are notorious for breeding of dengue mosquitoes because old vehicles, old utensils and other seized items retain rainwater. These items should be kept covered,” he said.

Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, but the period may stretch till mid-December.
