With the arrest of an Afghan national and seizure of four kilo cocaine worth around Rs 20 crore in the international market from him, Delhi Police on Tuesday claimed to have busted an international drug cartel whose roots are spread as far as South American and African nations. The arrest comes few days after three drug traffickers, including a personnel of Jammu & Kashmir Police, were arrested with possession of cocaine worth around Rs 35 crore.
According to police sources, the 46-year-old accused, Ahmad Jawid alias Nabi (46), is a native of Afghanistan and was arrested on February 10. “Ahmad told police that they were developing a far-reaching alliance with cocaine producers of South American and certain African nations for devising new routes of trafficking into Asia which has seen emergence as a new consumption market owing to the general rise in economic prosperity,” the officer added.
“The syndicate, to which Nabi belonged, was being handled by one Gafoor, reportedly an Afghan national who resides intermittently in Afghanistan and Pakistan and orchestrates the functioning of his cartel using different international numbers of Pakistan and Afghanistan,” the officer added.
Ahmad told police that he came to India on December 8 last year after which he got a consignment from two Afghani nationals in Chandni Chowk area. “After collecting the consignment, Ahmad was delivering samples of the drug to contacts in Delhi and Jaipur on the instructions of Gafoor. In Delhi, the samples were supplied, amongst others, to some African nationals and in Jaipur, the samples were supplied to two South Indian men on the directions of one Middle East based contact of Gafoor,” police officer said.
