In a bid to revive the controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, a high level team, headed by Secretary (Urban Development Department) Rajendra Kumar, visited Indore to attend a workshop on BRT. The two-day workshop is being organised by the Ministry of Urban Development to showcase the successful model of Indore BRT. The experiences of Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Rajkot, Surat and Pune BRTs would be discussed.
“The workshop will enable participants to understand the basics of BRT systems with respect to design and implementation and share national and international experiences. It will help cities with new BRTs to establish high-quality systems while giving cities with existing BRTs an opportunity to optimise their systems and achieve better service quality,” said a senior official of the Urban Development Ministry.
The Government is planning to revive the controversial BRT corridor project in Delhi. It is also planning to go ahead with the other 14 BRT corridor projects that include corridors from Narela to Azadpur (15 km), ISBT Anand Vihar to Connaught Place (11 km), ISBT Kashmere Gate to Tikri Border, Mundka (26.5 km), Mukundpur to Palam More (29 km), Sarai Kale Khan to Jorbagh (6 km) and National Stadium to Ghazipur (13.20 km). Meanwhile, the Kirby Place to Tilak Nagar (4.30 km) section would be executed by Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The detailed project report for this corridor has already been prepared. The presentation is expected to be given before lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung by the end of this week. The final decision on future of BRT corridor is expected to be taken by Jung at this meeting.
