India wants its leaders to guide global family: Naidu

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has said India wants its leaders to guide the global family. Naidu said it should come from the universities with different innovative ideas. The Vice President also said early education of a child must be in mother tongue.

He was speaking at Delhi University's Centenary Celebration at University's North Campus on Sunday. Naidu said the Indian education system must also focus on "our culture".  "If the early education is given to a child in mother tongue they  will be able to grasp it. If given in another language, first they  have to learn the language and then they will understand," he said.

Naidu emphasised that children must learn their mother tongue first  and then other languages.  "One must have proficiency in their languages and have original  ideas," he added. Vice President Naidu, who is the chancellor of the university, was the chief guest at the event and Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education, was the guest of honour.

The Vice President launched a commemorative coin of hundred-rupee denomination, a commemorative centenary stamp, and a commemorative centenary volume (booklet) — a pictorial representation of the journey of the university. Delhi University was established on May 1,1922.

Naidu also said when Nature and Culture come together the future becomes bright. He pointed out to the students who go abroad for higher education or employment that they need to return to their motherland and do something for their land. He added that whatever they have achieved, it should be shared with the motherland.

Naidu also invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at an event on Saturday where the latter underlined the need to encourage the use of local language in courts.  "Yesterday PM Modi also talked about the need for local languages in courts. Why courts alone, it should be implemented everywhere," he added. He congratulated Delhi University for completing 100 years.

"I would like to congratulate all the people for the growth, development and progress of this university and for making this one of the prestigious institutions," he added.

Naidu also launched Undergraduate Curricular Framework (UGCF) 2022 (Hindi version), Undergraduate Curricular Framework (UGCF) 2022 (Sanskrit version), and a brochure, University of Delhi: A Glimpse - a reservoir of the historical landmarks achieved by the University.

Speaking at the event, Pradhan said the promotion of local languages will help in channelling students' creativity.

"The national education policy emphasised the importance of local language. The local language help in channelling the creativity of a student," Pradhan noted. Pradhan said that in future we will have to becomejob creators and not job seekers and Delhi University will play animportant role in this. He said that DU is celebrating its centenaryyear in the Amrit Mahotsav of the country. When the countrycelebrates 100 years of its independence, DU will be celebrating125 years of its establishment. DU will have to do a lot in the field of research in the next 25 years.

He also congratulated Delhi University for releasing brochures in three languages: English, Hindi, and Telugu. Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said, "We have completed 100 years of academic excellence. DU is doing very well. We will continue to make our contribution to the life of Indians."
