"The corporation had approved the proposal for the medical college in November last year and the entire infrastructure was ready by May this year. The Medical College also managed to obtain the nod of the Medical Council of India (MCI) in the first go in July. Barring the classrooms and laboratories, the entire infrastructure has been created by remodeling the existing structures within the Hindu Rao Hospital premises," he added.

The NMC has been selected among around three dozen entries from various countries on innovative projects. "The selection of the NMC's medical college has primarily been made on the ground of low cost incurred in its execution. The cost was reduced to just Rs 7 crore whereas it requires hundreds of crores to set up a new medical college. However, the corporation has managed to build the college by innovatively using the existing facilities at Hindu Rao Hospital. Moreover, we completed all formalities in just six months time, which included the clearance from the Delhi Government and the Medical Council of India," said Sharma.

Meanwhile, the corporation was also planning to publish the success story in international journals. "We are in touch with several international journals who have expressed their willingness to publish our achievement. A decision on this will be taken soon," Sharma added. He said the IIM Bangalore had also desired to publish the same in its journal but no decision has been taken yet. For creating infrastructure, as per the MCI guidelines, the NMC has attached the new medical college with its 900 bedded Hindu Rao Hospital and Rajan Babu TB Hospital. Hindu Rao Hospital, the biggest Government-run hospital in North Delhi, will give the students hands-on training. To meet the requirements, the civic body has also used its abandoned properties in and around the hospital premises. The three lecture halls, four laboratories, an auditorium and a big library have been set up by renovating and redeveloping unused building at minimum cost.
