Humanities now out of reach for many

St Stephen’s College cut-off list brought relief to Economics aspirants as there is no change in minimum marks required for admission this year. However, Humanities has brought disappointment.

While there is marginal increase in English (H), History (H) and Science (Physics and Chemistry Honours), the cut-off for Mathematics has gone up 3 per cent for Humanities category. Philosophy has set the highest mark, with 4 per cent hike for Science and 6.5 per cent rise for Humanities students.

For most of the courses, cut-off is above 95 per cent. “Economics cut-offs have remained the same since the number of seats have increased after reappropriation of seats on implementation of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme. Now, we have two sections and students saw a relaxation. The same goes for English, Sanskrit and science,” said KM Mathew, tutor for admissions.

As a result of scrapping of the BA and BSc programme, the shift to History, Philosophy and Mathematics has lead to increase in their cut-offs. “History has an increase of 1 per cent for Commerce and 1.25 for Humanities while philosophy has gone higher. A reason could be the limited number of seats — 10,” he added.

A disheartened student said, “I have a score of 92 per cent and was encouraged to grab a seat but now it’s impossible. I had not expected the philosophy cut-off to go so higher. There are other disciplines of Arts more famous than philosophy but now, it’s also getting out of reach. It is a huge disappointment.”
