It is the same December 16 today. My daughter’s voice still resounds in my ears when she told me that very afternoon that she will be back in the next 2-3 hours, but she never came back. How can I move on after her deathIJ My life ended after losing her,” said Nirbhaya’s mother with a lump in her throat.
Two years since the Delhi gangrape, little has changed in the Capital. The mother of the braveheart still awaits justice as she feels that the perpetrators of the dastardly crime have not been punished yet. “It’s been two years since the incident. But the accused have not yet been granted punishment. The case is pending in the Supreme Court and no court hearing has happen since the last six months. We are just awaiting justice,” said her mother. Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust had organised a pushpanjali sabha in the memory of Nirbhaya, the daughter of India.
A host of leaders presented floral tribute to the braveheart. Maneka Gandhi, Salman Khurshid, Arvind Kejriwal, Subramanian Swamy, Manoj Tiwari, Meira Kumar, Kiran Walia, Naveen Jindal, Malini Awasthi were present on the occasion.
“It is a sad truth that people who are considered weak are attacked first. We have come up with a range of schemes after BJP came to power. Changes have been made in Juvenile Justice Act, where now, if a 16-year-old is arrested in a rape case, we have to find out if the juvenile committed the crime with an adult mind or with a childish notion. If he committed the crime with an adult mindset then the punishment should be same as that of an adult accused, but if its done with a childish notion then magnum of punishment would be as that of a juvenile. Other than this, we will come up with something called one-stop crisis centre, where women facing any sort of harassment can lodge their complaints. This will be the next big thing and will fetch an overwhelming response,” said Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi.
lauding Nirbhaya’s parents for their stoicism, AAP chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “Her parents have shown courage and power to fight for justice. Two years on, sadly nothing has changed. Women are still unsafe in what has been termed as the rape Capital of India. All parties must quietly contemplate on changes needed in the legal system.”
