Hooda agrees to release water after Sheila's request

Published on:

In view of the water crisis in the Capital due to breach in Upper Ganga Canal in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit sought help from her Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda. This resulted in Haryana agreeing to release raw water out of UP’s share from river Yamuna from Tajewala barrage.

This would help in generation of more water at Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plants affected due to disruption in raw water supply from Ganga Canal. With arrival of 240 cusec from Tajewala and utilisation of water from storage tank in Delhi, it is expected that water supply would become normal in south and east parts of the Capital. The water from Haryana would be lifted from Wazairabad to take it up to SoniaVihar and Bhagairathi WTPs.

Dikshit has also thanked Hooda for his immediate intervention in the matter  Meanwhile, UP Government has taken up repair work at war footing which is expected to be completed in few days resulting in normal supply of raw water from the Ganga canal. A breach in Ganga Canal near Khatauli disrupted supply of raw water for Delhi.

Meanwhile, several areas of East and South Delhi continued to face water shortage due to a major breach in the Upper Ganga Canal in Uttar Pradesh. Areas like Mayur Vihar, Greater Kailash, Anand Vihar, South Extension and Vasant Vihar have been severely affected as raw water supply has been curtailed to the Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) in Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi.
