HoD seeks operative details

HoD seeks operative details

Nearly two months after an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) probe panel found no breach of standard protocols in the surgery of a minor girl whose both kidney were allegedly removed, the Head of Paediatric Surgery Department of AIIMS has sought operative details of the case from the hospital authorities.

Suspicious of the filed report, the HOD wrote to the Medical Superintendent

Dr. M C Mishra that he was not aware about the circumstances leading to the “removal of the functioning kidney” by the doctor.  The HOD has further said in the letter that the surgery was conducted during his absence.

The Histopathology report of the patient and enquiry committee report said it was a “rare case of congenital fusion of two kidneys” in this case: the left kidney was grossly hydronephrotic and enlarged in size which led to the diffusion of the both the kidneys.

“It was fused with the opposite kidney. The huge enlargement of the left kidney displaced the fused right kidney towards right side and hence, all preoperative imaging appeared as a normal kidney.”

A hospital sources said, “If institute’s committee report and Histopathology report of the patient is saying that it was a rare case of congenital fusion of two kidneys then on what basis the HOD is saying that it was a functioning kidney. That means, he is refuting the enquiry committee report of the institute and doubting histopathology report of the patient. As, the HOD is himself having a doubt on the institute’s report, then in case, another enquiry committee report should be formed to probe the matter.”

The letter also said the doctor who operated the girl has not submitted any clinical or operative details. If sources are to be believed, all clinical papers have already been submitted to the committee by the concerned doctor.

“If HOD wants any clinical and operative details, then he should ask the enquiry committee which has all the reports in its possession,” said the source.
