AIIMS Trauma Centre to enlist 59 more specialists

In order to equally distribute the workload and reduce pressure on doctors, the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre is planning to hire almost 59 more faculty members who are specialists. While currently, the centre only has 37 speciality doctors, they intend to enhance the number manifold keeping in mind the extended block coming up which is currently under construction. According to officials at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the new block would be fully operational in less than 15 months which means that the need for more faculty members in the department is of paramount importance.

According to spokesperson of AIIMS Dr Amit Gupta, they will soon be seeking approvals for faculty at the trauma centre. “We need to get approvals for these posts from the Standing Finance Committee. It is required to ease the pressure on the faculty right now. Currently we have 39 sanctioned positions and 37 faculty members. However, these doctors are dedicated to various departments in the entire trauma centre,” he said.

The main reason cited by Gupta for hiring nearly double the existing faculty is the current renovation going on in the centre. Three months back, the construction for an additional block at the Trauma Centre began. “The block is supposed to provide us with nearly 80 more beds and private wards. The plan has an 18-month deadline, but the machines and equipment will come in before that. So we should too gear up for the added pressure once that block commences services. Almost 12000 to 13,000 major trauma cases come here per year. Thus, we are looking at hiring these doctors,” informed Gupta.

Meanwhile, AIIMS has several expansion plans on the loop. While the one which will transpire on the land recently authorized by the Delhi Development Authority will take about two to three years to begin, other plans such as building a new emergency block, Out Patient Department and Diagnostic Centre are also on the lookout.

Gupta said, “We need a new emergency block and even a new OPD is required. Plus we want to create a diagnostic centre in the OPD so that it’s convenient for patients. These plans are at different levels of approvals right now. In about three years, these should also transpire.”
