Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked schools to highlight negative effect of tobacco use keeping in view the upcoming ‘World No Tobacco Day’.

The schools have been instructed to conduct poster making, essay writing and PowerPoint presentation and various other competitions to sensitise students about the adverse effects of tobacco.

“The CBSE is committed to support all initiatives by schools, which have the major responsibility to highlight and raise awareness among their students, staff and the community about the negative effect of tobacco use. Effective awareness-raising is possible through the conduct of various competitions, where students apply their knowledge, observation and creativity, through a variety of media, on the spot,” reads a notification by the board.

It has underlined these activities would go a “long way” in “eradicating” the menace of tobacco in the society.

The CBSE also suggested the themes for the different competitions. Under poster making, the theme is “Tobacco: A leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases”; under essay writing, the theme is “Tobacco kills in any form or disguise”; for report writing, the theme is “Media and Tobacco: how they get the message across! Document the harmful impacts of media, how the tobacco trade influences the media, and how the media can fight the habit of tobacco use among all age groups and students would be asked to make a power point presentation highlighting the “Tobacco: A leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases.”

Students may also send 2-3 photographs to show how they used their presentations to raise awareness among schoolmates and community, the board has directed.
