High ammonia levels water down supply

Published on:

Several households of Delhi witnessed low or no supply of water on Tuesday owing to reduced production in two of its water treatment plants due to high concentration of ammonia in raw water coming from the Yamuna River. Areas like Greater Kailash, Chanakyapuri, RK Puram and Mukherjee Nagar were hit by low water supply in the early hours of the day.

The DJB however, towards the later half of the day claimed to have resumed full production of treated water from the two WTPs at Chandrawal and Wazirabad. Water supply is expected to improve Wednesday onwards.

“The pressure of water was very low during the morning hours. The quality of water is also not good. Many a times we get red water and at times it is dirty black water,” said Jigar Patel, a resident of Daryaganj. Areas falling under the New Delhi Municipal Council and parts of south and north Delhi received less water on Tuesday as a spike in the level of dissolved ammonia in its raw water supplied to the treatment plants. “We did not face much of problem as we had stored water. Water supply did not stop although it was very low,” said Kashish Ahuja, a resident of Greater Kailash-I.

The contamination had occurred upstream in Haryana due to the discharge of untreated industrial waste into the Yamuna. “Due to concerted efforts at all levels, the pollution in Yamuna at the Wazirabad pond has started receding since morning. This has enabled DJB to restore normal production at both, Wazirabad and Chandrawal Water Treatment Plants,” said a DJB spokesperson.
